Suggested Recommendations

Posted 11 months ago

Another week, another new feature. The Suggested users feature allows you to see which users you've never recommended, yet interacted with alot.

It scans your tweet history (last 500 tweets) and counts how many times you've mentioned a certain person. Afterwards it simply checks if you've already recommended that person or not.

Once you select the people you'd like to recommend, you'll navigate to the second page where you can construct your #followfriday tweets.

This is set up in such a way that you have to add context to the tweets. The system otherwise doesn't allow you to send the tweets.

This is done in my never ending quest to add more value to #followfriday. Expect much more next week.

Note: this was made after learning of the Twitter tag project - Kudos to them for building the initial idea.

Showcase your recommendations with a widget!

Posted 12 months ago

I've added a really cool new feature today: Widgets.

At the moment, there is only 1 widget: The "mosaic" widget. Two more widgets will be added in a couple of days. One will display user biographies, and one will display actual #followfriday tweets.

Anyway, these widgets allow you to showcase either the people that you recommended, or the people that recommended you.

Consider this to be beta at the moment, some of the images may fail to load and you'll probably see alot of default avatars. This should be fixed over the next few days.

I've created a GetSatisfaction account to listen and implement your feedback.

Here it is, let's hear your suggestions!

A blast from the past

Posted 12 months ago

Are you new to #followfriday or simply want to dig in the archives?

This website logs all recommendations and allows you to see the top recommendations on a specific day, week, month, or even year.

For example, want to see what the first #followfriday looked like? here it is.

Use the controls at the top of that page to go to the next or previous week. Or switch between day/week/month or year view.

Finally, the dropdown at the top right allows you to switch between #followfriday, #tweepletuesday and #mrtweet recommendations.

One more, here are the top recommendations for the entire year.

See top recommendations in your network

Posted 12 months ago

This week saw the launch of what I think is a very cool new feature: personalized results.

Just type in your username at the above link and you will see the top recommendations in your network: made by the people you follow and no one else.

This is interesting because those recommendations are probably much more in tune with your personal interests and can lead to some interesting new tweeple to follow.

The differing results on TopFollowFriday.com and this site

Posted 12 months ago

Some people are confused as to why the results on this website and a similar site, TopFollowFriday.com are different, so I will outline some of the differences in this post.

First is probably the exact time a new day starts. We use central time. This matters because stats for the day are reset at that time.

However, the most important difference is in how the #followfriday tweets are processed.

On this website, retweets are ignored. Recommendations are personal and retweets are not, so that was a quick and easy decision to make. This is the biggest factor in the differing results on both websites.

Similarly, thank you messages are also ignored. Alot of people still use the tag #followfriday when thanking people for recommending them.

You can see a list of all the ignored tweets here.

Type your name in the input box to see which of your tweets were ignored and why. It's possible that there are a few mismatched tweets, I'm still working on making the algorithm better.

By next week, additional functionality will also be added to "unignore" tweets that were wrongfully ignored.

Using tags to create context

Posted 12 months ago

Most of the time people simply spew a list of tweeple in their #followfriday tweets without any context. It makes it hard to find the people we're truly interested in.

A good way to add context is to simply add tags for each person you recommend like so:

#followfriday Check out @improvingtheweb #php #entrepeneur, @jdevalk #wordpress.

Now @improvingtheweb is associated with the tags "php" and "entrepeneur", whilst @jdevalk is associated with "wordpress".

The great thing is that you can use this website to see the top recommended people for whichever tag you want. The results will be sorted by either the number of recommendations or the number of followers.

For an example, see results for the tag #travel.

If you want to see a full list of tags, simply go to this page.

Welcome!

I've just created this rather simplistic blog which I will be using to update you on new developments on this website.

Oh, don't bother trying to subscribe, as I haven't yet added A RSS feed. Doh!
